Session to discuss effective suicide prevention efforts for Veterans upon transition from active duty

JUNO BEACH, Fla. (May 2, 2022) — Document Storage Systems, Inc. (DSS, Inc.), a leading provider of health information technology (HIT) solutions for federal, private and public health care organizations, today announced that it is presenting at The Spring 2022 DoD/VA & Government HIT Summit on May 4-5. DSS is also a platinum sponsor to this event in National Harbor, Md.

Titled, “Transition from DoD to VA – Maintaining Veteran Engagement in Care Post-Transition,” this session will highlight the importance of ensuring that each Veteran’s first experiences with the Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) are positive as well as several potential strategies to ensure engagement is sustained, and how technology can help.  Specifically, the presenters will:

  • Review risk factors and current challenges in engaging Veterans with care in VHA upon transitioning from active duty and why improving the transition is critical to suicide prevention efforts

  • Explore opportunities where technology can i.) assist with delivering positive early experiences for recently enrolled Veterans with the VHA; and ii.) help with monitoring care engagement and the identification of Veterans with declining engagement; examples will be shared from:

  • Other industries; and

  • Other VA use cases in which tracking care and ensuring Veteran engagement is critical

Dr. David LaBorde, senior advisor to DSS, Inc., will present and lead this discussion on Thursday, May 5 at 10:30AM to 10:55AM. LaBorde is a neurosurgeon in Atlanta and has been in practice for almost 20 years. Joining him is renowned clinical psychologist and mental health consultant, Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, who is a new strategic advisor to DSS, Inc. Together, these medical experts will discuss how engaging and retaining Veterans that have recently transitioned out of DoD and successfully enrolled into VHA services is essential, especially that the transition out of active duty in the DoD is widely recognized as a risk factor for suicide.

With this year’s theme, Integrating a Unified, Interoperable Electronic Health Record System for Military and Government, the Summit will examine current initiatives across the VA to improve customer service delivered to the Veteran, from fielding innovative commercial technologies, to refining governance & management structures to continually improve the quality of care.
