HIMSS 2023 White Paper: Technical Innovations Change Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention Paradigm

In addition to hosting a panel about suicide prevention in the care delivery setting at HIMSS 2023, DSS also recently had a white paper published by HIMSS titled, “Technical Innovations Changing the Paradigm in Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention.”

The white paper highlights new approaches to using real-time Machine Learning (ML) and Emotion Artificial Intelligence (Emotion AI) to address behavioral health challenges and detect risk factors associated with suicide.

In particular, a multidimensional approach integrating real-time ML capabilities could assist in detecting potential risk factors for suicide drawing upon multiple data sources. Responders on the VA’s Veteran Crisis Line (VCL) must answer a significant number of calls per shift and need these kinds of tools and capabilities to assist them in assessing a Veteran’s suicide risk level in real-time.

The new white paper also discusses how new EHRs “born in the 21st Century Cures Act era” are finally addressing the challenges of digitization and the need to personalize care. This new EHR is becoming foundational for connecting to a richer ecosystem of modern digital health applications, systems, services and devices necessary to deliver high-quality, affordable and patient-centric care.

The Juno EHR for Behavioral Health is precisely this kind of new “born in the 21st Century Cures Act era” EHR that is effectively designed to support processes around patient safety and data sharing.
