As DSS celebrates its 35th anniversary, the milestone reflects more than longevity. It represents a continued commitment to improving health care through innovation, partnership, and a mission-first mindset centered on those who matter most: our Veterans.

Since its founding in 1991, DSS has evolved from a small team with a bold vision to eliminate paper-based health care processes into a trusted health IT partner supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and health care organizations across the country. With the same passion and unrelenting dedication to align with VA’s digital transformation strategy and highly reliable care delivery for Veterans, DSS continues to expand its impact through advancements in cloud, security, interoperability, and next-generation solutions.

In this Q&A, DSS President and CEO Mark Byers shares reflections on the company’s journey, the growth of its portfolio including Juno Health and SBG Technology Solutions, and how DSS is continuing to elevate patient safety and care by supporting VA through secure, modern infrastructure like the DSS Health Cloud.

Q: DSS is celebrating 35 years. When you reflect on that journey, what stands out the most to you?

Mark: What stands out most is the consistency of our mission. From the very beginning, we believed that health care should be more efficient, more connected, and ultimately better for patients. Over time, technology has changed dramatically, but that core focus has not changed.

We started by helping organizations move away from paper. Today, we are supporting some of the most complex health care environments in the country with secure, cloud-based solutions. Through it all, our work has remained centered on improving care, especially for Veterans.

Q: DSS has had a long-standing partnership with VA. How has that relationship shaped the company?

Mark: Our partnership with VA has defined who we are. Supporting the largest integrated health care system in the country requires not just technical expertise, but also a deep understanding of clinical workflows, security requirements, and the mission behind the care being delivered.

As a Veteran myself, this work is personal. We are not just delivering software. We are supporting caregivers and improving the experience for those who have served, and that responsibility drives everything we do.

Q: Over the years, DSS has expanded its portfolio. How do Juno Health and SBG Technology Solutions fit into the company’s growth story?

Mark: Both are great examples of how we continue to evolve to meet the needs of the market.

Juno Health represents our commitment to delivering modern, flexible health care solutions beyond federal space. It allows us to bring the lessons we have learned from decades of VA experience into commercial health care environments, improving usability, interoperability, and efficiency.

SBG Technology Solutions has become an important extension of DSS’ federal capabilities. Their growth reflects the increasing demand for advanced engineering, cybersecurity, and enterprise IT capabilities across federal agencies.

Together, these organizations expand our ability to deliver integrated technology, services, and strategic support while staying focused on mission outcomes.

Q: Security and compliance are more important than ever in federal health care. How is DSS addressing this through the DSS Health Cloud (DSSHC)?

Mark: The DSS Health Cloud is a major step forward, not just for us, but for the broader ecosystem.

We are actively progressing through the FedRAMP High authorization process, building a secure, compliant foundation that supports federal health care requirements.

Just as important, DSS Health Cloud helps industry providers lower the barrier to entry into the public sector. Instead of building compliant environments from scratch, vendors can leverage DSS Health Cloud to inherit security controls, accelerate time to market, and focus on innovation rather than infrastructure.

This approach allows more commercial health tech companies to bring solutions into environments like VA faster and with less risk, while maintaining the highest standards of security, interoperability, and patient safety.

Q: DSS has supported VA through multiple waves of modernization. How do you see your role evolving moving forward?

Mark: Modernization is not a single event, but it is an ongoing journey. As VA continues its digital transformation, our role is to help ensure continuity, interoperability, and stability along the way.

Looking ahead, DSS is building toward a federal health IT infrastructure that is AI-ready by design, capable of supporting predictive modeling and intelligent clinical decision-making at enterprise scale.

Our core focus remains modernizing clinical and healthcare administration systems to drive greater efficiency across every point in the Veteran patient pathway. To get there, DSS deploys managed services and leading technologies that reduce IT infrastructure complexity across integrated healthcare systems, giving VA clinicians more time for care and less time managing systems. That approach has carried us through every wave of transformation in this space, from legacy EHR architecture through precision medicine to cloud-native and cybersecurity-first design. FedRAMP High is a key milestone on that path.

We have been building toward this moment for years, because the mission has never changed: better care for every Veteran, through systems that are as reliable and committed as the people who depend on them.

Q: DSS has also made a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility over the years. How does that tie into the company’s mission?

Mark: Corporate social responsibility is a natural extension of our mission. If we’re focused on improving care for Veterans, we also have a responsibility to support the communities around them.

We prioritize initiatives that align with that purpose, including Veteran support, community outreach, and programs that expand access to care, education, and resources. It’s not just about funding, but it’s about staying engaged and making a meaningful impact.

Our efforts also span a broad range of impact areas, from supporting environmental initiatives that promote sustainability to providing humanitarian assistance for communities in need. At the end of the day, our goal is to support Veterans not only through technology, but through the communities where they live.

Q: After 35 years, what continues to motivate you and the organization?

Mark: It always comes back to the mission. Technology is important, but what matters most is the impact it has on people.

Every solution we build, every system we support, ultimately affects patient care. For us, that means Veterans. I am grateful and proud of our human capital at DSS. Knowing that our work helps improve access, safety, and outcomes is what drives us forward.

At 35 years, we are proud of what we have accomplished, but we are even more focused on what comes next.
