A Look at Our History

Document Storage Systems (DSS), Inc. is an internationally recognized leader in the integration, development and innovation of health information technology (HIT) solutions that help make healthcare delivery systems stronger, better and faster.

The company was founded in 1991 by three brothers with a vision to reduce the heavy reliance of organizations on labor- and time-intensive paper systems. Convinced that the use of technology to convert paper documents into computer-accessible ones would become the next big industry trend, Mark, Ron and Joe Byers formed DSS.

A Pioneer in Electronic Documentation Technology

In 1994, DSS was contracted by the West Palm Beach division of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The office was seeking to deploy a technology solution that would enable the VA to streamline administrative efficiencies by digitizing the voluminous amount of paperwork the office processed in providing services to the region’s veteran population.

DSS’ groundbreaking collaboration with the Florida VA led to the development of the company’s flagship product offering—electronic documentation software that integrated seamlessly into the VA’s open source EHR known as the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture, or VistA. DSS currently maintains and supports approximately 2,500 production software installations for VA medical facilities located around the country.

A Commitment to Healthcare Quality and Equality

Since its humble beginnings in a Broomfield, Colorado basement and through its growth into a nationwide company with offices in Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Virginia and Utah, DSS has embraced the challenge of developing cutting-edge technology that enhances healthcare quality and equality.

Throughout the growth and success of the company, the Byers have kept their parents’ words of wisdom front and center—put the customer first.

As a result of our efforts, DSS has earned a worldwide reputation as a responsive partner capable of developing custom healthcare technology and deploying it on large scale for both government and private sector organizations.
