DSS to preview Open Choice vxVistA at HIMSS

Juno Beach, FL (February 14, 2008) – DSS, Inc. the leading developer of enhancements to VistA, the award winning enterprise class health care system software developed by the VA, today announced that they will be previewing Open Choice vxVistA 2008 edition at the annual meeting of the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS), Booth 3127, in Orlando. According to Mark Byers, President of DSS, Open Choice vxVistA presents a new concept in health care software. "We wanted to combine the economic advantages of Open Source with the support and predictability of a proprietary product. We now have world class software backed by a reputable vendor at prices that anybody can afford." Byers went on to say that users of Open Choice vxVistA will be able to make their own decisions about implementation and support. “We call it Open Choice,” he said, “because customers will have the choice of implementing it themselves, hiring a third party to do it or contracting with us for services. We will price our services on an a la carte basis giving them more options than they would get from either an Open Source or proprietary product.”

Open Choice vxVistA will have the latest updates and enhancements from the VA system, as well as, enhancements that DSS has developed for non-VA use that Byers says are crucial for using VistA in a non-VA environment. “This includes the ability to print prescriptions and lab orders which is an Ambulatory care requirement and adding a graphical user interface to the traditional roll and scroll Admission, Discharge and Transfer module of vxVistA,” he said, adding that, “in all, we have made well over 100 enhancements to the VistA core.”

vxVistA users will also have choices when it comes to support. While DSS will issue, at minimum, bi-annual updates that include up to date VA patches and new DSS enhancements, vxVistA users will have the option to purchase the upgrade service or acquire the patches themselves and apply them to the system or not upgrade the system at all if it is otherwise meeting their needs. “We will, of course, immediately issue any patches if they affect patient safety,” Byers pointed out.

Pre-release versions of the system are undergoing testing by key DSS customers and partners. General release is scheduled for early 2nd quarter this year.
